Toddler injured in Auckland hit-and-run

An Auckland boy narrowly escaped death when his mother pushed him out of the way of a speeding hit-and-run driver.

The mother told Newshub of the terrifying moment she and two little boys were almost killed on their way to kindergarten.

Four-year-old Karamveer Singh is one very lucky little boy. He does have a broken foot, but his parents know that's a small price to pay for a stranger's potentially deadly act of stupidity.

"If I didn't push my nephew and pull my son, I think he's just crushed in the tyre on the road," says mother Mandeep Kaur.

Ms Kaur, who is 37 weeks pregnant, was walking her son and nephew to kindergarten on Baverstock Rd in Flat Bush last week when a speeding driver nearly wiped them out. Her quick reaction is the only reason she and the boys are still alive.

"I'm crying and I'm told, 'Somebody help me, help me'."

Police are looking for a white, four-door sedan captured on CCTV driving away from the scene.

A teacher from the school next to the kindergarten believes the driver could be a local. It's not the first time the white car has been spotted speeding along Baverstock Rd.

There is a crossing outside the school but it's not always manned.

Karamveer's parents would like to see a permanent zebra crossing installed as well as speed cameras.

"I'm happy if they want to put it on my property," says father Pardeep. "I'm happy to do it because a lot of people are speeding here."

As for Karamveer, he'll return to hospital for further treatment tomorrow - now not only mummy's little monster, but mummy's little miracle.
