Rich-lister's son admits police officer assault

The Dunedin-based heir to the Delegat family fortune has admitted assaulting a police officer and a campus watch officer outside a student pub.

Constable Alana Kane required hospital treatment for a black eye and swelling to her face following the incident on March 26 last year outside Starters bar.

Nineteen-year-old Nikolas Delegat appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Friday morning, pleading guilty to an amended charge of assaulting Const Kane, with intent to obstruct her in the execution of her duty.  He also admitted assaulting a Campus Watch officer and a charge of wilful damage.

It's alleged Delegat became angry after hearing a comment a friend made about his girlfriend, punching a hole in a window. He then punched a Campus Watch officer who tried to break up an argument with his girlfriend, and violently resisted police as he was being arrest by Const Kane.

Delegat had previously fought for name suppression, but those requests were quashed by the Court of Appeal in November.

The Otago University student is the son of Jakov "Jim" Delegat, who heads the family-owned winemaking empire Delegat Group.  Their wealth was estimated at $350 million in last year's NBR Rich List.

No convictions were entered by Judge Michael Crosbie, at the request of Nikolas Delegat's lawyer Marie Taylor-Cyphers, who said her client would be applying for a discharge without conviction.

He was remanded for sentencing in August.
