Residents of Auckland's Waiheke Island have a chance to break away from the Super City.

The Local Government Commission is considering a call from Waiheke Island residents to split from Auckland, and set up its own independent council.

Locals wanting to stay or leave have Wednesday and Thursday this week to make their case when officials are on the island.

"We want to know what it is that's right with the current arrangements with the Auckland Council," says Local Government Commissioner Sir Wira Gardiner.

"We want to know what's not right, and we want to know from them - how do they see the future."

The island lost its independence in 1989, when Waiheke merged with Auckland council.
