A Dunedin business owner has had a busy weekend trying to repair more than $10,000 worth of damage to his car yard on Friday morning.

Mitchell Motor Court owner James Mitchell says he arrived on Friday to find his yard had had a makeover.

"I arrived at work and I was walking up towards the office and I noticed paint on the windows, I looked around and just saw paint over all the cars" he says.

"[I was] just in a mad panic, I thought to myself 'that car is on a bit of an angle' then looked around and saw half the cars are on a bloody angle [and found] half the tyres have been slashed as well.

"Who would do this? Is probably the first thing [that went through my mind] and why?"

More than 30 cars were covered in green paint, 22 slashed tyres, five keyed vehicles and the office graffitied.

A paint bucket and paint brush were taken away by police for finger print testing.

"It seems targeted and its like a really big thing they've done. They've spent a lot of time here doing what they've done." Mr Mitchell says.

"It's just the feeling when you get home at night, we're a pretty open target here and you get home and it's all you think about, it's your livelihood and how you feed your family and it's a horrible, horrible feeling."

Mr Mitchell has been flooded with offers of support and help from local businesses around Dunedin.

"I've had messages from other businesses offering to polish cars." he says.

"Dunedin's a real community and the business community is really helpful and strong here."
