Now there's Amy Street in Thames and like the others, it has a cast of colourful characters leading remarkable lives.
Here on Amy Street, 60 adults with intellectual disabilities live in the old miners' cottages.
They're supported to live independently and not just exist. The social context gives them something meaningful and people to interact with.
Now their lives have become a film and Story went to meet some of its brilliant characters.
