The Fire Service says three adults and five children were "lucky to escape" a fire at a South Auckland house on Friday morning, as they had no working smoke alarms.
Five fire engines were called to the property in Otahuhu at around 5am on Friday.
A fire service spokesperson said the fire was contained by 6am, and the cause of the blaze is still being investigated.
There were no working smoke alarms in the house, the spokesperson said.
The Fire Service is urging people to install smoke alarms, or contact their local fire station if they're not sure how to do it.
