North Shore horror house set to scare on Halloween

Trick-or-treaters beware - there's a Halloween house on Auckland's North Shore that'll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

In a dark corner inside the Northcote Rugby Club, there's something a little freaky going on.

From witches and ghosts to mummies and spiders, there's a scare around every corner guaranteed to give you goose bumps.

The Halloween house stretches across five rooms, and putting it together is no easy feat.

"[It took] approximately three weeks to put it all together. We basically go through, cover it all up so it's nice and black, and then we go through and put all the big props up," says organiser Gail Shewan.

Ms Shewan and her family source most of their spooky props from the US. They say the annual scaring has become a community tradition.

The haunted house is in its 16th year, and after more than two decades there's certainly no shortage of ghouls and ghosts to send a shiver down your spine.

"We had it in our garage to start with. It extended from our garage; with my husband being a builder he built a house, and then that got too big so we decided to do it here," Ms Shewan says.

Ms Shewan is expecting more than 1000 people through the house this year, which she says gets all kinds of reactions.

"The men are actually the worst sometimes."

With the haunted house open until Halloween night tomorrow, you can expect to hear screams for a while yet.

The Spooky Shed is located behind the RSA on Recreation Dr, and will be open from Saturday to Monday, 5:30pm to 9pm. Entry is $2 and goes to the Auckland SPCA.
