Kiwi Christopher Adams, a senior business reporter for NZME, has died in Cambodia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) has confirmed.
"The ministry is aware of the death of New Zealander Christopher Adams in Cambodia," an MFAT spokesman told Newshub.
"The family has requested privacy at this time and the ministry will not be providing any further detail."
Fellow business reporters at the New Zealand Herald paid tribute to the 34-year-old on Wednesday, praising "his dogged contact work and old-school reporting".
"He was a popular and well-liked contact among many of the key players in the financial markets," they wrote.
"Adams will be sorely missed by the Business Herald team, where he was a friend and respected colleague.
"He had a selfless attitude to chasing the news and was fearless in asking the tough questions of New Zealand business."
Assistance is being provided to Mr Adams' family from New Zealand's Bangkok, Thailand embassy.
