Is it time New Zealand schools got rid of homework?
Research shows homework has no benefit at primary school level and it's believed the learning should be done in the school environment.
It is an approach championed by one of the most successful education systems in the world -- Finland.
But for parents in New Zealand it's still the nightly routine crammed in around dinner and tired kids.
Students at one Christchurch school, Waitakiri Primary, don't carry bags weighed down by homework. They do things differently and call it home learning.
The kids at this school are learning from 'real challenges' which are optional along with reading and basic facts which are not.
These 'real challenges' included reporting on the lantern festival, cooking a roast meal for the family and one student walked along the spit which was 2 kilometres back and forth.
So is it time New Zealand saw the back of dreaded work sheets and projects and move towards a different approach?
