Police are on the lookout for a man who approached a young girl in his car and told her to get in on Monday afternoon.

The man is alleged to have pulled over on George-King Memorial Dr in the west Dunedin suburb of Outram to speak to the girl at about 3:40pm.

The girl refused his advances, and fled the scene on her bike. She is said to be shaken by the incident.

She has since described the man who approached her as being in his 40s or 50s, having short, balding hair and tattoos on his arm.

She says he was driving a blue or green hatchback and driving towards Outram.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident or think they may know who the man is have been urged to come forward and speak to Sergeant Kevin Davidson, on (03) 471 4800.
