Six years after being severely damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and after two years of repairs, Mona Vale has reopened its doors to the public.

The grand Fendalton homestead has been meticulously restored to its former glory at a cost of $3 million, returning a historic gem back to the people of Christchurch

"It's been a long, long battle," says Richie Moyle, Christchurch City Council heritage manager.

"We started work here on January 15 and we've just finished this month. She's a much, much better building than she was before."

Every single brick was taken off the building's facade, numbered and kept aside while the building was strengthened with timber and steel.

Councillor Jaime Gough's great grandfather owned the property for many years. He cast his eyes over the repair work on Monday, and thinks his relatives would approve.

"I think the restoration team deserve medals… This job was monumental."

Continental Catering has leased the building from the council since 1978. It can't wait to reopen the cafe and wedding venue in the homestead that it's been out of for the last six years.

"It's a very emotional thing for us - we have such a connection, we love doing what we do, looking after people's special occasions," says manager Greg Ward.

"It's just very exciting to have Mona Vale for all to enjoy."

Mr Ward says they'll also offer a special high tea service, which he hopes will be popular with visitors wanting a little slice of the Christchurch of old.
