Guy Fawkes Day is an enjoyable and exciting time of year for many - but for some people, and animals, the booms and sparkles of fireworks can be worrying and distressing.
Police say they want members of the public to enjoy fireworks in a safe and responsible way, and respect other people and property.
They are encouraging people to NZ Fire Service's guidelines for a safe Guy Fawkes.
Fireworks go on sale to the public on Wednesday, November 2, and can only be bought by those aged 18 and older, until November 5.
There are also some local council bylaws which prevent the letting off of fireworks in certain public areas - and police say to check with your local council for details.
If you notice anyone using fireworks in a way which endangers people or property, call 111 straight away.
