In the story of Christmas, is the donkey an unsung hero or imposter?
It was the worker of the nativity scene, delivering Mary to Bethlehem ahead of the Jesus' birth - or was it?
If the nativity was a movie, the donkey would surely be Best Supporting Actor. But there's a lot to chew over when it comes to the donkey's role in the Christian story of Jesus' birth.
Sound the donkey alarm because we might have been led astray when it comes to that bit.
"The imagination is a wonderful thing, so we are told the basics of the story and our imaginations are allowed to let go," says the Right Reverend Ross Bay, Anglican Bishop of Auckland.
Mr Bay says nowhere in The Bible does it say that Mary arrived on a donkey.
But the donkey's not budging from its Christmas spot - they're stubborn apparently.
