Hatchimals causing difficulties for some customers

Hatchimals, the hatching toys touted as this year's must-have Christmas present, have left kids around the world upset after many of the furry dolls turned out to be duds.

The toy, which starts out in egg form, is meant to "hatch" after owners knock, tap or rub the shell as it lights up.

But hundreds of people have been complaining on social media to toymaker Spin Master about their Hatchimal being "still born".

"Two days of trying to talk to a real person from @SpinMaster over a still born Hatchimal and still no luck," Brian Rager said on Twitter.

The company posted on Facebook on Boxing Day, saying it was "sorry to hear" about customers having challenges with their Hatchimals, and offered troubleshooting tips. The post has had nearly 2000 comments.

Spin Master is urging customers to make their complaint via direct messages, but many people are responding saying they're not getting a response.

"We have a stalled #Hatchimal haven't been able to contact customer service," Jessica Townsend posted on Twitter.

The toy has been a popular purchase in New Zealand this year, with some selling on Trade Me for up to four times their retail price.

A spokesperson for The Warehouse said it has not had any major customer complaints about the toys, but if customers do have a problem with one they are welcome to bring it in with their receipt for exchange.
