One of the people who kidnapped and assaulted a woman with a hammer in Dome Valley has been sentenced to more than three years in prison.
Jaclyn Keates, 29, had previously pleaded guilty to kidnapping, assault with a weapon and injuring with intent to injure following the incident.
The victim, who has name suppression, was found bound and gagged on a Dome Valley road after the horrific attack in May.
In the Auckland High Court on Tuesday, Justice Simon Moore said it was a miracle she survived the attack, during which she was beaten with a hammer.
"This was a cruel and sadistic attack, the victim has suffered seriously due to a grudge, nothing more," he said.
"She has been robbed of a normal life."
Keates was sentenced to three years and two months in jail for the crime.
The victim, who was 19 at the time, read out her victim impact statement in court saying she didn't know Keates before the attack.
"To have someone that I did not know punching and hitting me was terrifying," she said.
"I was scared I was going to die.
"I am still having trouble sleeping at night and require medication. I can't go out and live like a normal person."
Both the victim and her mother wept in court as the judge read out the details of what had happened to her.
Five others accused of being involved in the crime will stand trial in February.
