Chunks of concrete have fallen from a central Wellington building onto the footpath below.
A cordon is in place outside the Hope Gibbons building on the corner of Dixon and Taranaki streets, just off Courtenay Place.
A police spokeswoman told Newshub pieces of the facade came away in high winds at about 10:30am on Sunday.
Several officers were at the scene but council workers have since taken over monitoring the site.
Chris Cassidy from the Four Kings bar - on the ground floor of the Hope Gibbons building - says they have been forced to close while safety inspections are carried out.
Other bars in the building couldn't be contacted but nearby Les Mills remains open.
Strong winds and gusts of up to 74km/h are hitting Wellington on Sunday.
A separate cordon is in place along parts of Courtenay Place and Tory Street while the earthquake-damaged Reading car park is demolished.
