Mayor keen for Singapore Air Force to set up base in Manawatu

The Manawatu District Mayor says the region will roll out the red carpet for the Singapore Air Force if it sets up camp in Manawatu.

The Defence Minister has confirmed the Singapore Government's undertaking a feasibility study to determine whether Ohakea air base could house an Air Force squadron.

Helen Worboys says the influx would be a huge benefit to the region.

"Very exciting news, both for our community and the region," she told Newshub. "Anything that helps with our growth, we'll be rolling out the red carpet and helping them in any way that we can."

Ms Worboys says the council already has infrastructure in the works that would support population growth.

"Singapore is one of New Zealand's closest friends, and we have a very long and proud defence relationship with Singapore," Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee said.

Ohakea this weekend is hosting the New Zealand Air Force's 80th birthday celebrations.
