It's been a wet end to the week for much of Aotearoa, with heavy rain stopping the cricket in Napier and flooding areas around Wellington on Thursday, but Waitangi weekend is set to be a stunner, MetService says.

While patchy rain has hit Auckland on Friday, Hawke's Bay has a hot sunny day with a 31degC high in Napier and Hastings.

League fans heading to the NRL Nines in Auckland on Saturday should don hats and sunscreen, as it'll be mostly sunny with a bit of cloud.

It will also be a balmy evening in Auckland on Saturday, so Guns N' Roses fans can leave their leather jackets at home.

Fine weather is also forecast for Waitangi, with a bit of scattered rain over Northland easing on Friday afternoon and temperatures in the high 20s over the weekend.

Motorists braved wild and wet conditions north of Wellington on Friday morning, after 52mm of rain fell in Lower Hutt on Thursday and 42mm in Wellington.

But Saturday is forecast to be sunny in the capital, with some fresh northwesterlies easing in the evening. Further south, Dunedin looks set for a warm Sunday with a forecast 26degC high.

It'll be a good long weekend for many boaties, as conditions are expected to be great out on the water for northern New Zealand, MetService says.
