Wellington Mayor Justin Lester has spent Thursday night in police custody.
"I was lucky to have the opportunity to go on patrol tonight with Dave and Alex from the Wellington Police Station," the Mayor posted on Facebook on Friday.
He said over a couple of hours with the cops he visited a domestic incident in the CBD, then transferred an individual from the cells to the mental health unit at Wellington Hospital.
"Each scenario had potential to be dangerous and I was incredibly impressed at their level-headed, compassionate and patient demeanour.
"We have one of the best Police forces in the world and spending time with Dave and Alex certainly confirmed that for me. Thank you for the hard work you do to keep Wellington safe."
