Lucky sky gazers were treated to a spectacular display this week as the Southern Lights lit up the sky over Auckland.
"The Aurora on the Auckland horizon and massive airglow filling the frame in the sky...a magical moment that was awe inspiring to witness," photographer Larryn Rae wrote, along with an amazing long exposure shot of the Aurora Australis over west Auckland.
An aurora is a light display in the sky, produced when high energy particles from solar wind or the sun hit the atmosphere, creating lights of different colours.
The aurora is mostly seen in the South Island. Viewings in Auckland are rare due to the light pollution and low level of auroral activity.
