Flood victims still mopping up the damage

A week on from the west Auckland floods, some stores are still shut, and the block of shops and flats next to a sinkhole which opened up in New Lynn may have to be demolished.

While many home owners are still cleaning up, one family has lost everything.

Kieran Connellan and his partner Diana Rusbatch are still cleaning up after the floods ruined everything in their home.

Ms Rusbatch compared the smell of the house to "month-old washing left in the washing machine."

At their house last week, the water was verging on reaching chest level.

"I grabbed Brodie, our five-year-old, and put our oldest cat in the box" Mr Connellan told Newshub.

"The torrent coming through the driveway was basically white-water that we had to force our way through."

Ms Rrusbatch and Mr Connellan are now hunting for a new rental.

A few kilometres away, it's been an incredibly tough week for pastry chef Robert d'Cruze - the cake shop he only just opened is all but gone.

He estimates the damage could be up to $40,000, and he didn't have any insurance.

"I already spoke to an insurance company [for a] quotation, they were going to come over to have a look because [for] commercial insurance they need to come and have a look first," he said.

Around the corner at Bike Barn, video from last week showed just how much water came into the store.

It's still closed and not known when it will re-open.
