Water brown with sediment hurtles down the river, thoroughly flooding the banks from which sightseers would usually view the falls.
The falls are on the Wairoa River, which is fed by the Hunua Ranges. The river goes on through Clevedon, which saw farms, homes, cars and livestock submerged in muddy waters on Tuesday night.
South-east Auckland residents say the deluge is some of the worst weather they've seen in years.
Thousands were left without power, several roads were closed and two school camps were forced to evacuate as flood waters gushed through the region.
