Headphones are to blame for the death of a teenager in west Auckland after he got hit by a train on Thursday morning, police say.
The 16-year-old was out for a run just before 7am when he was hit near the Ranui Station.
Police say CCTV looking over the tracks showed the teens had been wearing headphones.
"He has been unaware of the train approaching as he crossed the tracks," Senior Sergeant Richie Thompson of Waitakere Police says.
He died at the scene.
His family were looking for him after he was late home, and learned of his death when they saw emergency services at the scene.
"This is the scenario that every parent fears the most and we extend our utmost sympathies to the boy's family. It was a very emotional scene for all involved," Snr Sgt Thompson says.
Police and Victim Support are supporting the family, and his death has been referred to the coroner.
His name won't be released until the teen's extended family are told.
