Police officer charged with Invercargill murder

A police ballistics expert will help piece together the events of a fatal Anzac Day shooting in Invercargill.

It comes as southern police say they've been shaken to their core by the fatal shooting involving one of their own.

Constable Benjamin McLean, 47, is charged with the murder of his wife and the attempted murder of a man she was with.

Verity Ann McLean died and Garry William Duggan was taken to hospital after the shooting on Otepuni Ave in Invercargill, just after 8pm on Tuesday.

Southern District commander Paul Basham says Mr McLean's colleagues are shocked by the incident.

"While devastating, this is a one-off event and we cannot recall a similar tragedy in recent times to allegedly involve a serving police officer."

The gun recovered from the scene was not a police-issued weapon.

"A ballistics expert is coming from Auckland to piece together what happened and this will take place on Thursday."

Newshub reporter Dave Goosselink says police wouldn't elaborate on the injuries McLean sustained, but he appeared to have deep scratches on his face and scalp at his bedside court hearing on Wednesday.

McLean was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

"Gary Duggan who suffered multiple gunshot wounds - he's currently in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital," he told The AM Show.

He says even though McLean and Ms McLean were married, they weren't living together at the time, and it's understood she was in a relationship with Mr Duggan.

Police confirmed they were living together at the property beside an industrial building on Otepuni Ave.

The Police Association's Chris Cahill says they will be meeting with the McLeans' three children and wider family today to see what they need, and provide support.

"We'll see what needs we can meet once we understand what they require - whether that's providing some assistance with psychological help or whether it's financial, we'll be open to what's best for them and the family they've got around them."

In a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Superintendent Paul Basham said McLean handed himself into the local police station around 40 minutes after the incident.

Mr Basham also said the male victim and accused were both in a stable condition in hospital.

A cordon remained in place on Wednesday morning between Lindisfarne St and Inglewood Rd. The property is under guard.

A neighbour, Terry Brown, reported seeing a man acting suspiciously just before the shooting. He said he saw a man on a bike change his clothes before heading in the direction of the building where the shooting took place.
