David Bain is continuing to move on with his life - and now has a new name to go with it.

His new name, which has been changed by deed poll to William David Cullen Davies, is now recorded on his birth certificate. He could also be on the move to a different city or country.

Deed poll is a legal document that allows a person's change of name.

The 45-year-old recently listed his Christchurch home for sale on TradeMe with an asking price of more than $415,000.

In 2016, Mr Bain accepted a $925,000 ex-gratia payment from the Government following his long, convoluted and ultimately unsuccessful path to compensation.

At the time, Justice Minister Amy Adams said the payment was "in recognition of the time involved and expenses incurred by Mr Bain during the compensation process and the desirability of avoiding further litigation."

Mr Bain was first found guilty of the murder of his five family members in Dunedin in May 1995 and was jailed for life with a minimum term of 16 years.

After years of legal battles, he was granted a retrial in 2007. The 2009 trial saw him acquitted of killing his parents Robin and Margaret, sisters Laniet and Awara and brother Stephen.

Newshub approached the Department of Internal Affairs, which confirmed the change.
