A dog has been mauled to death at a doggy daycare facility in west Auckland.

Wilson, a 17-month-old huntaway-doberman cross, was found lying in a pond at Valley Dog Daycare when his owner, Mike, went to pick him up.

"My husband went to look for him, and found him dead in a pond on site. He was covered in bite wounds and puncture marks", Mike's wife Bridget Chung told Newshub.

"The sheer number of different bite marks suggests to us multiple dogs and a prolonged attack. Wilson suffered a horrible, lonely death."

At the time, the owner of the daycare hadn't noticed his absence  and now says she is so upset she has closed her business and will never re-open.

Mrs Chung says she expected better from a daycare facility.

"[Wilson was]cruelly mauled to death at daycare, when someone should have been watching and caring for [him]."

Doggy daycare is an unregulated industry, but operators still must comply with the 1999 Animal Welfare Act.

The dog's owners, along with the SPCA, are now calling for that to change.

Auckland Council is investigating the incident.
