Drone-delivered pizza by the end of the year

Flying pizza is one step closer to becoming a reality with Domino's expecting to expand their drone operations by the end of the year.

The availability of the deliveries will increase as the pizza chain works with Flirtey, a drone delivery service.

The first airborne pizza delivery in Auckland made headlines worldwide earlier this year.

The drone, which is flown autonomously using a GPS tracking system, has an extendable wire cord that drops the Domino's Pizza package at one's door or another suitable place once it arrives at the address.

Flirtey says the sky-high delivery marked the final step in the approval process.

The benefits of delivery by drone include avoiding traffic and congestion, and a faster delivery time.

Domino's Group CEO Don Meij says they see drone delivery "as an essential component of pizza deliveries in the future".

It's not clear where in New Zealand the pizza will take off.
