An Auckland man was knocked unconscious while delivering a pizza on Sunday evening.

The 47-year-old was on Kelman Rd in Kelston at about 6pm, when he was attacked from behind while getting the pizza out of the boot of his silver Subaru Impreza.

The attackers took $20 and the pizza and fled. The victim was found 15 minutes later by a member of the public. He's currently in Auckland hospital in a serious but stable condition with a serious head injury.

Police don't know how many people were involved in the attack.

"An innocent member of our community was just doing his job, when he was struck over the head and left there unconscious," said Detective Sergeant Kelly Farrant said.

"People have a right to go to work and do their job safely without being violently assaulted. It is simply not good enough."

"This could have been far more serious had a member of the public not found the victim and called for help."

Anyone with information can call Henderson police on (09) 839 0600 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 11.
