Amnesty International is urging our Government to speak out against alleged human rights abuse happening in Australia's offshore detention centres.

Protests in Auckland and Wellington today will mark what Amnesty International's Meg de Ronde says is the fourth anniversary of the Australian government's tough stand against asylum seekers.

"Just because it's Australia perpetrating [human rights abuse], that shouldn't be any reason that we let them off the hook," Ms de Ronde told Newshub.

"New Zealand is one of the few countries that hasn't condemned what Australia is doing with their offshore detention centres."

Ms de Ronde says the detainees deserve education, a safe home and a chance to rebuild their lives.
