A Gisborne marae has become the first to open its doors to Google Earth.

Te Pahou Marae in Manutuke, west of Gisborne, has joined the 'This is Home' virtual tour feature, which explores how humans have adapted to their landscapes in different parts of the world.

People from around the world can now take a 360 degree tour both inside and outside the marae.

It's one of 22 featured locations around the world, including Madagascar, Indonesia, Mongolia, Kenya and Peru.

The aim of the app is to give people a new perspective on the hardships indigenous cultures face due to the rapid change of external pressures.

The century-old Pahou Marae is "the beginning and the end", Albert Stewart of the Ngati Maru subtribe says.
