A baby hawk has had a lucky escape, after being rescued by a tug boat off the coast of Auckland.
Southern Ocean Specialists owner Gary Pervan says his crew were aboard the Sea Pelican, when they spotted the distressed bird in the water at about midday on Thursday.
Rescuers Paul Schwass and Osmond Reid plucked the bird, believed to be an indigenous hawk, from the water and transported it to the Onehunga Port.
On the way back to dry land, they wrapped the bird in a blanket, dried it off a bit and fed it some fresh water.
Once they were back on land, they called the Auckland SPCA, who arrived at the port and took the bird away for some TLC.
