Jacinda Ardern posted a video to her social media accounts, showing her opening an artwork of Auckland's Sky Tower by a primary school student.
"My mum is a school librarian, so with her help, I challenged the students to create a little piece of Auckland for your office in Wellington," the present's accompanying card read.
The artist was a student named Zara from Panmure Bridge School.
A "mix-up" meant the artwork didn't arrive in time for New Zealand Post's Twitter Secret Santa opening day on Tuesday.
Ardern tweeted that a 'Super Secret Santa' had stepped up to make sure she had something to open and posted a video of herself unwrapping a Christmas tree decoration.
At the end of Wednesday evening's video, Ardern thanked the country for joining her on "this wild Secret Santa ride".
"I like the concept of Secret Santa so much, because it's all about giving and receiving from people who are just generous, who you haven't even met before."
