The person who died in a crash on the Desert Rd on Friday afternoon was a young child.
The accident, which involved two cars and two truck-trailer units, happened just before 3:30pm between Waipakihi Rd and Rangipo Intake Rd.
In addition to the deceased, one person with moderate injuries was taken by ambulance to Whanganui Hospital.
Police won't release the age and gender of the deceased until family have been contacted - many are overseas, so they say it could take some time.
Both the serious crash unit and the commercial vehicle safety team are investigating.
The Desert Rd remains closed as of Saturday morning.
