Eight sperm whales have been found dead on a beach in South Taranaki.
The Department of Conservation (DoC) received reports of a stranding on Thursday morning at a remote site south of Hāwera.
The whales were dead when DoC staff reached the beach at around midday.
Local iwi representatives have blessed the site of the stranding.
DoC says it is planning its next steps, and will try to have a veterinary pathologist investigate why the whales stranded and died.
