A horrific image has shown the aftermath of a serious crash on State Highway 6 in Nelson that left a 62-year-old woman in a serious condition.
The photo shows the front of the woman's car almost unrecognisable with a crumpled front bumper and wheels torn off.
It was one of two vehicles that collided head-on on the south side of the Hope Saddle south of Nelson.
According to a spokesperson for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust, the woman suffered multiple injuries and was cut free of the car by Fire and Emergency NZ.
Intensive care paramedics and St John road staff provided first aid and she was flown to Nelson Hospital Emergency Department.
