Teacher's registration cancelled over porn, inappropriate relationships

A Northland teacher's registration has been cancelled after giving a student money to buy lingerie and watching porn at school.

The Teachers' Disciplinary Tribunal says the teacher - who was married with children - committed "serious misconduct". It released its decision this week after hearing the case in February 2017.

The teacher, who has name suppression, started an "inappropriate relationship" with two students in October 2014.

He gave a year 11 student a bottle of Brittany Spears perfume, calling her a "wonderful adorable young person".

He then gave a year 12 student a similar bottle, along with money for her to buy "the most beautiful lingerie for a truly loving girl".

He sent the year 12 student 46 text messages, calling her a "sweet angel" and describing his "unconditional love" for her.

"You are in need of a good bikini suit for summer," he texted her.

"Would love to drink with you someday and see how funny you would look. Hehe. Miss you."

The Teachers' Disciplinary Tribunal says the man failed to demonstrate a high standard of professional behaviour and respect boundaries.

"Teacher R's registration was cancelled for serious misconduct after engaging in inappropriate contact with two students, and for accessing pornographic material from his school laptop on school premises during school hours," the Tribunal says.

The teacher admitted the charges and was ordered to pay over $20,000 in costs.
