It's the worst road crash in New Zealand since 2005 when nine people died after a mini-bus full of tourists hit a timber truck in Matamata-Piako, Waikato.
Newshub reporter Alex Baird is at the scene of the crash and told The AM Show police are still in the process of working out what caused it.
It was a head on collision on a relatively normal piece of state highway - there's a tight corner in the road, but the weather was clear yesterday.
