Disgraced US TV presenter hangs on to his Otago high country station

Disgraced US television presenter Matt Lauer has been allowed to keep his Central Otago high country station.

Mr Lauer bought Hunter Valley Station on the northern shores of Lake Hawea in 2017.

His employment as a presenter on NBC's Today Show was terminated in November last year after a complaint of sexually inappropriate behaviour in the workplace was laid against him.

The incident prompted the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) to investigate to consider if he had breached their good character condition.

"After investigating the matter and taking legal advice, we have reached the position that we have insufficient evidence at this time to take proceedings against Mr Lauer for breach of the condition," LINZ deputy chief executive policy and overseas investment Lisa Barrett says.

"In addition, the OIO has made it clear to Mr Lauer of his continuing obligation to remain of good character as a condition of his OIO consent."

No charges have been laid against Mr Lauer so he isn't deemed "unfit" to own the land, Ms Barrett says.

The OIO will continue to monitor Mr Lauer and will take further action if required.
