Te Papa was evacuated on Friday evening because of a suspicious package, but it's turned out to be a false alarm.

Police were notified just after 6pm of "an item of concern" that was located in a loading dock, a police spokeswoman said.

Te Papa management initiated an evacuation of the area as a precaution.

The New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended the scene and conducted a series of controlled detonations.

Late on Friday night police said the item was "found to not be a safety risk".

Police are still investigating the incident.
