New Zealand man shot breaking into US home with knife, duct tape

A New Zealand man has been shot in the neck after attempting to breaking into a US home armed with a knife, duct tape and pepper spray.

Troy George Skinner, 25, began talking to a 14-year-old Virginia girl using Discord, an online chat service. But after three or four months of conversation, she attempted to end their communication, WTKR News reports.

Skinner then decided to fly to the US to meet the teen, purchasing duct tape and pepper spray when he arrived.

Their violent encounter took place last Friday (US time) when the teen's mother was home with her daughter.

"He was not invited here, he was not expected here, he had been told in the past that the daughter no longer wished to communicate with him," Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew said.

Suddenly the family heard Skinner attempting to break in with a brick. The mother told him she was calling police and that she was armed with a handgun, WTKR News reports.

"After repeated warning by the mother, Skinner smashed the glass on the door and reached through to unlatch it," a sheriff's office spokesperson said.

"As he reached through the door, the mother shot twice at Skinner with a .22 caliber handgun."

He was shot in the neck and attempted to flee the scene. He was then taken to hospital, where he's in the custody of the Goochland County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say the investigation into the break-in is ongoing and charges are pending.
