New Zealand has woken to a bitterly cold and foggy morning as winter continues to march on.
Forecaster NIWA had predicted almost record-low temperatures for Saturday, including on 1degC in Auckland and -2degC in Hamilton.
"Some near-record cold temps tonight across the upper North Island! Near freezing across much of Auckland & Northland," a spokesperson wrote on Twitter.
Previous record lows for Auckland were -1.5degC in 1967 and -4degC in Pukekohe in 2006.
At midnight Whangarei had already dropped to only 2.6degC, while Auckland was only 3degC. According to NIWA it was still 3degC in Auckland at 7am.
Fog appeared overnight across Auckland city. But an Auckland Airport spokesperson confirmed there been no disruption to flights out of Auckland Airport.
Looking ahead to Sunday, MetService is warning runners in Wellington to prepare for some unsettled weather on the day of the Wellington marathon.
"Northerlies strengthening with some shower activity during the morning. Strong winds and rain coming later on - extra motivation to finish a bit quicker," a spokesperson wrote on Twitter.
Further south, MetService has issued a severe weather watch for parts of the South Island's west coast on Sunday.
The ranges of Westland south of Otira and Fiordland north of Doubtful Sound have been warned to look out for heavy rain.
