New Zealand has woken to another cold morning as icy weather continues to blast the country.

NIWA says the cold temperatures are being caused by a wave of high pressure arriving from the Tasman Sea. This results in clear skies and calm winds at night.

Auckland is forecast to have a low of only 4degC on Thursday, but that's almost balmy compared to the 0.2degC recorded in Mangere on Wednesday.

According to NIWA the temperature in Auckland at 6am was 6degC.

Friday night is expected to be bitterly cold again, with an overnight temperature of 3degC predicted in Auckland.

Palmerston North will be plummeting even further, with an overnight temperature of 0degC expected.

Throughout the cold snap the South Island has recorded almost normal temperatures, Christchurch forecast to receive 3degC on Thursday.

It's expected to drop a little over the weekend, and 0degC is expected on Saturday.
