Snow falling across the South Island has closed roads and sparked road warnings for motorists.

State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford is closed due to snow as well as State Highway 7 from Hanmer to Springs Junction (Lewis Pass).

A number of roads in Otago have vehicle restrictions in place and motorists are warned to be aware of black ice.

Road snow warnings are in place for a number of state highways and temperatures plummeted across the South Island overnight.

Mt Hutt hit -8.9C, Wanaka got down to -1, Queenstown, -.5 and Mt Cook got down to zero degrees, MetService meteorologist Mark Bowe says.

"The cold spell is going to continue, the cold mass has bought snow flurries, continuing today and into tomorrow."

Heavy falls could reach low lying areas of 400 metres with the blistering cold weather expected to clear by Thursday, Mr Bowe says.

Further north, Auckland and the central North Island can expect scattered showers on Monday.

The western part of the North Island could also expect heavy rain and hail up until midnight on Monday, Mr Bowe says.
