Te Papa museum has been evacuated because of a suspicious package.

Police were notified just after 6pm of "an item of concern" that was located in a loading dock, a police spokeswoman says.

Te Papa management initiated an evacuation of the area as a precaution, she says.

"The safety of people is obviously very important to us. We have evacuated our building as a precaution, and are working with police to resolve the issue," a Te Papa spokesperson says.

"We will update when we can."

The New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended the scene and conducted a series of controlled detonations.

"The EOD team has conducted a series of controlled detonations, and remains at the scene assessing the situation," a police spokeswoman says.

Police are investigating the incident.
