Te Papa museum has been evacuated because of a suspicious package.
Police were notified just after 6pm of "an item of concern" that was located in a loading dock, a police spokeswoman says.
Te Papa management initiated an evacuation of the area as a precaution, she says.
"The safety of people is obviously very important to us. We have evacuated our building as a precaution, and are working with police to resolve the issue," a Te Papa spokesperson says.
"We will update when we can."
The New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended the scene and conducted a series of controlled detonations.
"The EOD team has conducted a series of controlled detonations, and remains at the scene assessing the situation," a police spokeswoman says.
Police are investigating the incident.
