They may read a statistic, or watch a news story, pictures carefully curated to remove the devastating carnage of the crashes on our roads.

But for first responders, the road toll is much more than a number.
Doug Gallagher and Karl Bevin have many years' experience responding to serious crashes.
Doug as a district operations manager for St John's and Kevin as a constable with the NZ Police's serious crash unit.
They both agreed to speak to Newshub about the terrible experience of being called to the scene of a serious crash. Their perspectives gives an insight to a tragedy that affects many, but few of us will ever see.
