An Upper Hutt man has been charged with the theft of two human toes from an exhibition of corpses.
The 28-year-old appeared in the Auckland District Court on Monday charged with theft and interfering with human remains at the Body Worlds Vital exhibition in Auckland on May 4.
The travelling exhibition showcases the preserved remains of real humans, many of whom suffered from afflictions like smoker's lungs and arthritis when they were alive.
More than 17,000 people donated their bodies to the Institute for Plastination, the medical establishment behind the exhibition.
Each stolen toe is valued at $5500 according to court documents, reports NZME.
An arrest warrant had been issued for the man, who has interim name suppression, after he failed to appear in court earlier on Monday, but has since been withdrawn.
It's been indicated he will plead guilty to both charges and was remanded on bail. He will appear in the Wellington District Court on July 2.
Body Worlds Vital will be on display at Princes Wharf until July.
