As it happened: North Island battered by rain, gales - and there's more to come

Council officials in Gisborne and Hawke's Bay will be out and about on Tuesday, checking if the latest heavy rain has caused any further problems.

The regions are still recovering from Monday's storm which caused particular problems on the east coast.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The town of Te Karaka has been completely cut off
  • State Highway 2 at Te Karaka between Graham and Whatatutu Roads is closed
  • State Highway 5 between Napier and Taupō has been closed
  • A slip is blocking the southbound lane on State Highway 25 in the Coromandel
  • Civil Defence is warning to only use the roads for essential travel
  • 220 millimetres of rain could fall in the next 12 hours
  • 1033 properties are without power
  • MetService have issued heavy rain and strong wind warnings for most of the North Island

11:15am - Two State Highways closed

State Highway 5 between Napier and Taupō has been closed due to slips and State Highway 2 between Gisborne and Ōpōtiki has been closed at Te Karaka due to flooding.

There are currently no official detours in place.

11:07am - Schools closed across the Bay of Plenty region

The following schools and early childhood education centres have been closed:

10:17 - Some severe weather watches lifted in Auckland and Northland

A heavy rain watch has been lifted in Northland south of the Bay of Islands and a strong wind watch is no longer in place for Auckland.

Strong wind watches remain in place for Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula, eastern Waikato, Gisborne, Taumarunui, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Wellington, Nelson and Buller.

Heavy rain watches remain in place for Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Waikato north of Hamilton, Taupō, Taihape and the Canterbury Hills and ranges north of Waipara.  

10:02am - Power returned to around 500 in Gisborne

Now 1033 properties remain without power. The Gisborne District Council has been forced to close its Te Puia service centre due to the outage.

9:55am - South Island now in the firing line

NIWA is warning there could be flooding, slips and travel delays. The heaviest rain is expected over the Kaikōura Ranges.

9:39am - Napier Port closes terminal due to wind

Strong gusts of winds are increasing the chance of falling containers. In a Facebook post the port said the decision was made to protect staff and operators on the port.

Initially the port said it would only be closed for 20 minutes, but the forecast may force it to stay closed longer.

9:15am - River bursts its banks onto farm

Farmer Grant Talbot watched cattle swim to safety after the nearby river broke its bank and flooded around 20 hectares of his farm.

He thinks he may have lost some lambs in the flooding.

8:40am- Wiggin Bridge hit by logging debris again

Logs and other flooding debris have stacked up around Wiggin Bridge on Tauwhareparae Rd. The bridge was severely damaged by last Monday's storm.

8:29am - Slip blocking Thames Coast Rd in the Coromandel

State Highway 25 is under stop/go control between Ngarimu Bay and Whakatete Bay. NZTA warns motorists should expect delays or avoid the area.

8:14am - Rural school buses cancelled

Civil Defence emergency manager Louise Bennett has warned no rural school buses will be running on Tuesday and advised parents to call their children's school and check if it is still open.

Residents in Te Karaka have been warned to avoid flushing toilets as surface flooding is affecting the sewerage system.

7:50am - Trucks trapped by rising floodwater

Police received a call at 5am that two trucks had become trapped by floodwater on Matawai road.

They can't be towed out and Newshub understands the drivers are still inside the trucks.

Nearby farmers are said to be checking on them

7:24am - Over a thousand without power in Gisborne

Newshub reporter Emma Cropper says power began flickering in Gisborne around midnight on Monday.

Approximately 1500 properties are now without power and authorities are working to get it turned back on.

Around 220 millimetres or two months' worth of rain could fall on Tuesday and rivers are already swollen.

6:20am - The town of Te Karaka has been cut off

Gisborne Civil Defence emergency manager told The AM show residents in the town have been communicating with Civil Defence and are okay.

She said any non-essential travel should be delayed.

6:00am - Gisborne and Hawkes Bay wake to assess the damage

MetService forecaster Tuporo Marsters said on Monday evening the heaviest rains fell in the Gisborne ranges.

Approximately 130mm of rain fell in the last 12 hours and he warned motorists should be careful out on the roads.

"[There could be] slips in those areas that are getting heavy rain, watch out for the wind as well travelling over the hills, those Remutakas and those high areas," he said.

Civil Defence was on alert overnight, but there were no reports of any serious distress caused by the weather or flooding.
