Weather: Sunday to bring snow, heavy rain, thunderstorms

The fine weather looks to be over, with Sunday set for a wet and windy day.

MetService has issued a warning for heavy rain and gales to strike the country, driving Kiwis back indoors.

"An active front is forecast to move east across New Zealand on Sunday, bringing periods of heavy rain with possible thunderstorms to western parts of the South Island and the lower North Island," MetService warns.

"A heavy rain watch has been issued for Taranaki, the Tararua Range, the ranges of Nelson, Buller and also Westland south of Otira, as well as Fiordland."

The eastern side of New Zealand will have gusty northwest winds, which may reach severe gale strength through Cook Strait on Sunday. Areas affected include Wellington, Wairarapa and Marlborough Sounds.

"The next trough is coming on Sunday morning and will bring snow and freezing rain along the Southern Alps and rain into the western North Island too," WeatherWatch.co.nz says.

Next week is expected to be mostly dry for most, although Monday will be cold.
