The star of the Auckland high school 'Magic Mike' ball proposal says he wanted to make it "big and flash" for his girlfriend who'd been waiting all term for it.
"My girl Malina Folau has been waiting for a proposal since the beginning of the term and she ended up thinking I wasn't gonna do one," Aorere College student Michael Ili said.
It seems it was worth the wait judging by the reaction to the proposal, with a video of it viewed almost 200,000 times on Facebook.

The proposal took place at the Papatoetoe school on Wednesday, after being planned out the night before in a group chat between Michael and all of the Year 13 boys at his school.
"The plan was to sing a nice song for her then surprise her and everyone else with the Magic Mike," Michael said.
The proposal begins with a group of students singing an acapella version of 'Can I Call You My Girl' by D-Ground. Then Michael emerges shirtless holding a rose and it transitions into the Magic Mike inspired dance to 'Pony' by Genuwine, as students surround Michael throwing fake money.
"My moves were made up on the spot...it all went the way it went I think because of the hype I had from my boys," he said.
The proposal ends with Michael pouring Lewis Road Creamery chocolate milk over himself. Then he presents Malina with a bouquet of flowers and gets down on one knee to ask if she'll go to the school ball with him.
Michael described her reaction as "happy shock", saying "she called me ugly before saying yes" but "she loved it".
He wanted to thank all of the Year 13 boys at Aorere College and Malina's friends for their help in setting up the proposal.
Maria said yes, and the ball takes place in two weeks time.
