Police have confirmed a young woman was killed when a bus rolled half way down Ohakune Mountain Rd on Saturday afternoon.
Thirty one people were on the Ruapehu Alpine Lifts shuttle bus when it crashed just after 2:30pm. Twenty were injured.
Ross Copland from Ruapehu Alpine Lift says the loss of life is "absolutely tragic news".
"From our perspective the most important thing is to give the absolute support we can both to the staff and emergency services involved but also to the family," he told RadioLIVE.
He says he spoke to the victim's family briefly, but is also respecting their need for space and privacy.
In the meantime, Mr Copland says thorough checks are being carried out.
"We're stepping back through our maintenance records and making sure all of our equipment is up to scratch.
"We've been in contact with the Department of Conservation. I spoke to the Ruapheu District Council and they've got an engineer coming to the site today. The police and serious crash unit are working through a whole detailed process."
Turoa ski field will remain closed today while the safety of shuttle buses is reviewed.
District Mayor Don Cameron says work had just been done to make the road safer.
"This year we've instituted new traffic control to ensure the roads are far safer, and the speeds have been reduced on that road making the speed 80km/h."
Mr Cameron thanked emergency services who attended the accident on Ohakune Mountain Rd, which runs to Turoa skifield.
The bus has been taken to Whanganui to be examined as part of the police investigation into the crash.
An earlier report that the victim was a child turned out to be incorrect.
